It’s OK to Keep Some Things to Yourself
No One Needs to Know Everything About You
When I was in Christian elementary school, I would have to attend assemblies on a weekly basis that the school called “chapels.” During those chapels, a speaker would come up and give us a sermon on different aspects of Christian life such as sin, defending our faith, how to conduct ourselves, and so on.
A particular aspect they frequently talked about was proclaiming our love for Jesus to nonbelievers. One speaker said something I have never been able to forget, and I am paraphrasing here:
If you love Jesus, wouldn’t you want to tell people?
Would you want to share that love with the world?
If it means so much to you, you’d want to share it.
At the time, I didn’t understand that way of thinking. Not because the concept was difficult to grasp, but because it was the opposite of how I behaved. Why did I have to tell people when I loved something? Couldn’t I care for something or someone privately? Why did everyone need to know?
After hearing this same message multiple times from varying leaders, I started to believe I must not truly love the pop music I sang…
